What actually moves the price
Use these to read the quote in front of you and to ask the questions that make competing quotes comparable.
- Whether you keep the same fuel type. Changing between gas and electric means new connections, and this is the largest single source of an unexpectedly high quote.
- Whether the unit moves. Relocating a system means new water, gas or electrical runs.
- Access. A unit in a roof space, on a stand, or up a flight of stairs is a two-person job.
- Compliance work the old install predates. Most commonly adding a tempering valve, which is required on new storage installations and is not optional.
- Gas line capacity. Continuous flow gas units often need a larger supply line than the old system had.
- Whether the electrical supply needs work. Heat pumps and some electric units need a dedicated circuit.
- Disposal of the old unit, which should appear on the quote rather than as a surprise.
The most useful thing you can do with a hot water quote is make it separate three things: the unit itself, the labour, and the compliance work. Those three move independently, and a single lump sum hides which one is driving the price.
Outside Victoria, check your own state's energy department. Schemes differ, several states run energy upgrade programmes that include hot water, and some run nothing at all.
