Australia adopts a national plumbing code, applied through each state's own plumbing regulator, and most work beyond simple maintenance is notifiable. Notifiable means the plumber tells the regulator the work was done and certifies that it complies, and you get a copy.

Work that usually triggers it

• Anything involving a connection to the water authority's main or sewer.

Why the paperwork is worth chasing

At sale, a conveyancer or a purchaser's inspector will ask about recent work. Certified work is a closed question and uncertified work is an open one, which turns into a price reduction or a special condition. If a defect appears years later, the certificate establishes who did the work and when, which is what a warranty claim runs on.
