How to check a roof plumber licence in Queensland
The short answer
The Queensland Building and Construction Commission is the authority for roof plumbers in Queensland, and the licence to look for is a roof and wall cladding, or plumbing and drainage, depending on the work. Ask for the number and the exact entity name it is held under, which is often a company rather than the person on site, then search the QBCC licensee register yourself rather than accepting a photo of a card.

Queensland licenses roofing and cladding as trade contractor classes as well as licensing plumbing and drainage, so the same register covers both halves of a roof, but the class shown against the licence still decides which half.
How to check it, in order
- Ask for the licence number and the exact name it is held under. It is often a company rather than the person standing in front of you, and the register searches on the name it was issued to.
- Search the QBCC licensee register yourself. A photograph of a card proves that a licence once existed, not that it is current.
- Check the class or category covers this work. A licence that is valid for one kind of work is not a licence for another, and that is the gap that most often matters.
- Check the expiry date and any conditions or disciplinary history recorded against it.
- Confirm the ABN on the quote matches the entity named on the licence, using ABN Lookup. A mismatch between who is licensed and who you are contracting with is worth asking about before you pay a deposit.
What the licence covers
Gutters, downpipes, flashings, rainwater tanks and metal roof coverings, which are the water-shedding parts of a roof. In most jurisdictions this is a class of plumbing licence rather than a building one, which is the part that surprises people.
What you can legally do yourself
Cleaning gutters from a safely placed ladder. Not replacing them, and not walking a roof: falls from height in domestic settings are a well-documented cause of serious injury, and tiled and old fibre cement roofs will not reliably hold a person.
Roofing sits across two licensing systems and which one applies depends on what is being done. Replacing tiles or a tiled roof is generally building work. Replacing gutters, downpipes, flashings or a metal roof is generally roof plumbing, which is a plumbing licence class. A contractor who does one is not automatically entitled to do the other.456
That distinction is worth raising before the quote rather than after, because it decides which register you check and who is answerable if the work leaks.
Related questions
- Is a roofer the same as a roof plumber?
- Not usually. Roof plumbing covers gutters, downpipes, flashings and metal roof coverings and is a plumbing licence class in most jurisdictions. Tiled roofing is generally building work under a different licence. Both are legitimate trades; they are licensed by different systems and checked on different registers.
- Do I need a licensed person to replace my gutters?
- In most jurisdictions yes, because guttering and downpipes are roof plumbing and roof plumbing is licensed. The regulator named on this page publishes the classes that apply where you are.
