South Australia publishes its licensing requirements for trades through Consumer and Business Services, including the value threshold above which building work contractor licensing applies. The reserved trades, electrical, plumbing, gas, need a licence at any value.

How to check it, in order

  1. Ask for the licence number and the exact name it is held under. It is often a company rather than the person standing in front of you, and the register searches on the name it was issued to.
  2. Search Find a licence holder yourself. A photograph of a card proves that a licence once existed, not that it is current.
  3. Check the class or category covers this work. A licence that is valid for one kind of work is not a licence for another, and that is the gap that most often matters.
  4. Check the expiry date and any conditions or disciplinary history recorded against it.
  5. Confirm the ABN on the quote matches the entity named on the licence, using ABN Lookup. A mismatch between who is licensed and who you are contracting with is worth asking about before you pay a deposit.

What the licence covers

Nothing, in the sense the question is usually meant: there is no such thing as a handyman licence anywhere in Australia. What exists is a boundary. Unlicensed work is permitted below a value threshold and outside the reserved trades, and licensed work is licensed no matter who does it or how small the job is.

What you can legally do yourself

The same boundary applies to you. Fixed electrical wiring and gas work are licensed everywhere with no householder exemption. Plumbing has narrow, jurisdiction-specific exemptions. Building work is permitted below a threshold, and above it needs either a licensed builder or an owner-builder permit.

The useful way to think about this is that the work is licensed, not the person. Two rules run at once. First, a value threshold: below it, general building and repair work can be done by an unlicensed person. Second, a list of reserved trades that need a licence at any value. Electrical and gas everywhere, plumbing nearly everywhere, and others depending on the jurisdiction.

So a handyman can legitimately hang a door, patch plaster, assemble furniture, paint a room in most jurisdictions, and fix a fence. The same handyman cannot legally install a power point or connect a gas appliance, regardless of how competent they are or how small the job is.45

Related questions

Do handymen need a licence in Australia?
There is no handyman licence in any Australian jurisdiction. What matters is the work: below a value threshold, general building and repair work may be done unlicensed, and above it a builder's licence is required. Electrical and gas work are licensed at any value everywhere, and plumbing nearly everywhere. Both the threshold and the reserved list are set by the regulator named on this page.
Should I ask a handyman for public liability insurance?
Yes, and it is a reasonable question that a working business answers without hesitation. It is separate from licensing and from any statutory warranty insurance, and it is the cover that responds if something is damaged or someone is hurt while the work is being done.
