Do I need an electrician to install a ceiling fan?

Ceiling fans sit in the same category as light fittings for licensing purposes, because they connect to fixed wiring. But they add two problems a light does not.

The two extra problems

  • Weight and vibration. A fan is heavy and it moves. It cannot hang from a standard ceiling rose or plasterboard alone, and needs fixing to a joist or to purpose-installed support. A fan that comes down is a serious injury.
  • Speed control. Many fans need a compatible controller, and older wall controllers do not suit modern DC motor fans. Getting this wrong produces humming, poor speed range, or a fan that will not start reliably.3

Worth checking before you buy

  1. Ceiling height. Blades need adequate clearance from the floor and from walls, and low ceilings need a hugger style rather than a downrod.
  2. Whether an existing light point is in the right position, because moving it adds cost.
  3. Whether you want light and fan switched separately, which may need an extra wire run.
  4. Whether the location is outdoors or in a bathroom, because those need appropriately rated units.
