Who can install data and phone cabling in Australia?

This one surprises people, including some electricians. Telecommunications cabling in Australia is regulated by the Australian Communications and Media Authority, not by state electrical regulators, and the credential is cabler registration rather than an electrical licence. Plenty of electricians hold both. Not all of them do.

  • Any fixed cabling that connects, directly or indirectly, to the telecommunications network, which includes the outlet the NBN equipment plugs into.
  • Phone sockets, and structured data cabling terminated to a patch panel or wall outlet in a home network.
  • Cabling in a shared or common area of a strata building.

What you can still do yourself

Patch leads and anything with a plug on both ends are yours. Running a pre-made cable loosely between two rooms and plugging it in at each end is not fixed cabling. The moment it is terminated into a wall outlet that forms part of the building, it is.
