Can you tile over existing tiles?

The short answer

It is possible on some floors and walls with proper preparation, but in a wet area it is usually the wrong call, because it buries the existing waterproofing and adds height at the door and the waste.

Tiling over tiles is attractive because demolition is dirty, slow and expensive. It can work, and there are situations where it is genuinely sensible. A bathroom is usually not one of them.

The problems in a wet area

  • Waterproofing. The existing membrane is under the existing tiles. New tiles on top do not renew it, and if it has failed you have just covered the failure.
  • Floor height. Raising the floor changes the relationship to the floor waste and the door, and can leave the fall wrong or the door needing to be trimmed.
  • Weight. Two layers of tile plus two beds of adhesive is a real load, which matters on a suspended timber floor.
  • Bond. You are relying on the old tiles' bond to the substrate, so any drummy tiles underneath become a fault in the new floor.

Where it can work

  • Dry internal floors on a sound concrete slab, where height is not an issue.
  • Splashbacks and dry walls, with proper preparation and a suitable primer.
  • Situations where removing the existing tiles risks damaging a substrate that would then need replacing anyway.
