Do I need a permit or approval to install a generator at home?

The short answer

A generator that permanently connects to the house wiring requires a changeover switch installed by a licensed electrician, so the generator can never energise the network while the supply is off.

There are two ways to use a generator. Running appliances directly from it on extension leads needs nothing beyond common sense about fumes and fuel. Connecting it to the house wiring so the normal power points and lights work is a different matter entirely, and it is licensed work.123

Why the changeover switch is not optional

If a generator can feed the house while the house is still connected to the network, it can push power back up the service line. That energises supposedly dead conductors, and the transformer in the street steps that voltage back up. Line workers restoring supply after a storm have been killed by exactly this. A changeover switch makes it mechanically impossible for both sources to be connected at once.

What a compliant installation includes

  • A changeover switch, manual or automatic, that physically prevents parallel connection.
  • A dedicated inlet socket rated for the generator, rather than a lead with plugs on both ends.
  • Earthing arranged correctly for the generator type, which is a common error on portable units.
  • Residual current protection appropriate to the arrangement.
