Can I walk on my own roof to check something?

This is one of the few places on this site where the answer is close to simply do not. Falls from height are a leading cause of serious injury and death in Australian construction and home maintenance, and a domestic roof provides no edge protection, no anchor points and no safe path.

What actually fails

• Roof tiles, which crack under concentrated load and are then a leak you created.
• Older fibre cement sheeting, which can be brittle and may also contain asbestos.
• Skylights and roof lights, which look solid and are not, and which have caused fatalities.
• Battens weakened by rot or borers, particularly near a long-standing leak.
• Guttering, which is not designed to take a ladder's weight and will deform.

Safer ways to get the same information

• Photograph from the ground with a zoom lens or a phone on a pole.
• Look from inside the roof space, which is where you can actually see daylight through a gap and staining on the timbers.
• Use a drone, or ask the contractor to fly one, which is now common practice.
• Have the inspection done by someone who brings their own height safety equipment.
